The Sumerian Secret, Suspense Thriller

Penny Fletcher
 Author, Editor, Publishing Liaison

Politics, Suspense Fiction, Spirituality & a little Romance to Boot!

Bio, Short Version:

Leaving Tennessee with three young children, $300 and everything we owned in a 12-year old rust-bucket Ford, I ran 24-hour convenience stores (where I was held up twice at gunpoint), tended bar, slung breakfast at a fast food diner, managed motel offices, and drove a delivery truck.

But I had freelanced for True Romance, True Story and True Confessions since I was 19 and they taught me the basics of "the hook, climax, and conclusion," and said if I didn't leave readers crying or laughing they would not publish my fiction.

So I learned to transfer my emotions to paper really, really, fast!

But a story a month at $150 wasn't going to support my kids, so I knew I'd have to work a full time job continuously until I could make my living writing.

Author, Editor, Blogger & Publishing Liaison- 2015- Present

I AM NOT A PUBLISHER NOW. I despised it. Instead: As a Publishing Liaison I take my client’s work from the (free consultation) through evaluation and content stage, through editing, covers, assigning ISBNs, pagination, checking final copy and putting up on line for Indie Authors or preparing query letters and readying for submission to publishers & agents. I also do substantive editing (alone) for a flat $2 a page for manuscripts 12-pt single spaced, more than 50 pages.

Briefly- I have approximately 14,000 bylines on news, features, columns and magazine articles, many with photographs, since 1978. I now work mainly on my client’s work and my own books, having quit the newsroom, and also write a monthly column on the craft of writing for www.authorlink.com, that gets more than 30,000 hits.

While with the Florida Press Assn. and Community Papers of Florida I gleaned more than 50 awards for writing everything from hard news to feature “fluff.” These are listed by year on my website.

  • My most prized awards were for (IN HARD NEWS) “Health Care at Crisis Point;” (hard news interviews with FL. Governor and State Reps. 2011); “Farmers Lose Thousands as Freeze Kills Stock” 2012; “Faith-based Centers Struggle to keep up with Area Homeless” 2010.; “Presidential Aide Spencer Faircloth tells of Working Under Five Presidents” 2005.

  • IN COLUMNS: “Florida Should Let Independents Have Their Say in Primaries”; Statewide No. 1 winner 2011; “Residents Plead with Commissioners to Keep Programs in Place” 2010; Why the Crist Plan for Health Insurance Isn’t Helping Those Who Need it Most” 2014- Always for the Underdog- you get the point.

My Books are the same even though, as a journalist, I write in many genres.

  • If I Should Die Before I Wake: Rainbow House (Flew me to speak in Baden, Penn. In 1991 about Domestic Abuse (nonfiction) 1991

  • The Sumerian Secret- first of a series “Mystery. Myth & Madness” (Real background of NASA secrets with fictional characters. Suspense/thriller genre. Hacking, murder, graphic sex. 2014. Second Book (to be released in late 2017 or 2018.)

  • Will be Seeking a Large Publishing House or Producer For Manuscript in Progress:

  • Confidential Clientele- in the last editing stage now: fiction based on fact about the homeless people I have worked with on the street as a journalist. Composites of real people; how children are removed from parents by the very agencies supposed to aid them. Main protagonist is a hotel mgr. who allows these people use “blocked” rooms to clean up and rest, hiding it from the motel owner. She has two children and has been homeless herself and must do whatever it takes to keep a room and food on the table. Suspense/woman’s contemporary with graphic sex.

  • Several books under a pen name in the romance genre with graphic scenes for Secret Cravings Publishing, an online company. (Confidentiality clause enforced).

GOALS: Besides selling my own books, I highlight books I edit and coach in a monthly newsletter, News, Views & Boos (subhed: Not Quite a Normal Newsletter) in particular; I want to edit manuscripts in any genre, especially enjoying suspense fiction and erotic romance; political and many types of nonfiction. I can also write articles in any length requested on deadline and would be open to writing biographies. I am versed in terms for various religions having minored in comparative religion; Native American customs (being half Native American); politics and anything to do with print media. Print media work has also enabled me to interview until I find answers if I am unfamiliar with the topic at hand.
